99-361 IDeATe Portal: Learning about Learning
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Learning about Learning will provide an introduction to the science of learning. Students will explore the different ways that people learn, the factors that influence learning, and how to apply this knowledge to their own learning and in designing experiences in educational settings. Students also have the opportunity to apply what they learn by creating prototypes using the makerspace equipment at IDeATe and then testing these prototypes both outside and inside class. Each prototype aims to address the question, "How might we create research-based learning experiences that meet the needs of diverse learners?" The course begins with an introduction to the field of learning sciences, including foundational concepts and methodologies. Course lectures and discussions will be based on readings about situated cognition, constructivism, sociocultural theory, pragmatism, and cognitive science. Students will also review effective learning practices including scaffolding, project based learning, self regulated learning, learning in activity, and cognitive apprenticeship. The course concludes with research on collaborative environments and ecosystem approaches to learning.
