98-486 Student Taught Courses (StuCo): The Business of Sports
3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The Business of Sports explores how modern sports organizations operate at the intersection of performance and profit. The course covers fundamentals of managing sports clubs under budget constraints, the role of analytics, and key economic concepts such as diminishing marginal returns. Through cases like Moneyball, Formula 1, and the failed European Super League, students will analyze trade-offs between profitability and sporting essence. The course also expands globally, studying strategies in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and China, while addressing contracts, sponsorships, and multi-club ownership. A structured debate and guest lecture capstone the course, alongside a final project where students design strategic plans for real-world clubs.
