98-408 Student Taught Courses (StuCo): Philosophy in Pop Culture
3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Philosophy is often seen as a purely academic subject, precluding many from participating in it. But what if it didn't have to be like that? This course will examine traditional philosophical ideas, but through the lens of pop culture institutions we usually interact with casually. How should we theorize about the future... while watching Black Mirror? What constitutes a useful ethical framework... as seen in Futurama? How sure should we be of our religious beliefs... as examined through The Good Place? You will leave this course more knowledgeable about philosophy, but critically, more aware of the philosophical implications in the world around you, even in the places you'd never expect it.
