98-401 Student Taught Courses (StuCo): The Hidden Worlds of Studio Ghibli
3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
From the post-war tragedy of “Grave of the Fireflies” to the fantastical romance of “Howl’s Moving Castle,” Studio Ghibli’s films have captivated audiences all over the world with their heartfelt messages and perilous journeys. This course invites students to examine and explore the films throughout the course of the semester. Students will be expected to participate in in-class activities, complete assignments in a timely manner (including take-home quizzes), take a midterm, and complete a final project of their choice. There is no prerequisite; whether you have watched all of the films or none, you are welcome! Ideally, students will end the semester with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the worlds within the Ghibli films, and the world outside that shaped their creation.
