3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Course dates are: January 31st and February 7th. 10:00 - 2:30pm each day, HBH 1202 Feeling the impact of declining enrollment, a looming budget crisis, and a national teacher shortage, Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS), the largest school district in Western Pennsylvania (and the second largest in Pennsylvania), is undergoing reconfiguration, which may result in the closing and/or consolidation of numerous school buildings. In the backdrop, PPS continues to fail at educating its majority Black student population at high levels, which has resulted in an over three-decade struggle between the district and Black education activists. This course will explore the current state of PPS, the contribution of past and current Black-led education advocacy and activism efforts, and how effective district reconfiguration efforts could lead to educational justice for the district's most marginalized students.
