94-820 Consumer AI Systems in Health Care
3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
February 1, 8 and 15, 2026. • This course offers an exploration into the application of artificial intelligence and the modern healthcare industry. As the industry shifts from reactive treatment to proactive, patient-centric wellness, this course provides students with a deep dive into the diverse AI techniques supporting this evolution—ranging from foundational deep learning to cutting-edge frontier of Agentic models. By tinkering with agents capable of goal-oriented reasoning and real-time decision-making, participants will understand how technology is transforming the industry. AI systems are moving beyond predictive analytics to become active "digital assistants" to the specialized workers in the healthcare industry. • The curriculum bridges the gap between technical theory and real-world applications by going deep into a broad spectrum of clinical and non-clinical use cases. Students will explore how these systems streamline non-clinical operations, such as automating complex revenue cycles for a patient's wallet, optimizing hospital resource allocation for the hospital administrator, and personalizing patient engagement through intelligent virtual assistants. Simultaneously, the course tackles clinical trends and applications, including AI-driven precision medicine, early disease detection, and the integration of wearable data for continuous remote monitoring. Through this multi-faceted lens, learners will gain the strategic and technical literacy required to navigate the ethical, regulatory, and operational challenges of deploying AI in one of the world's most critical and sensitive industries.
