6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The goal of the PhD Practicum in Presentation Skills is to provide participants with skills necessary for preparing and presenting professional presentations. Participants must be current PhD candidates who are preparing job talks or papers for verbal presentations. This material, completed before the beginning of the practicum, provides the substance of participants presentations. Students will meet twice a week for seven weeks to practice skills in audience analysis, organization, visual design, delivery, and selfassessment. These skills will be practiced in a series of short, preparatory exercises resulting in a final presentation of either a job talk or professional paper. These exercises, as well as the final presentation, will be reviewed by both the student and the instructor. The practicum will be taught on a passfail basis. A pass signifies that the participant has prepared for and attended 100 of the class sessions and has actively participated in peer reviews of work presented by other class participants. By request of the student, letter grades can be assigned to completed exercises as part of the instructors assessment of hisher work.
