90-852 High Reliability in Healthcare
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Health care in the United States is largely delivered in systems of care that are complex, inefficient, error prone, and costly. There currently exists a high degree of variability in the delivery of care between providers and settings of care. Other industries outside of health care have been successful at reducing inefficiencies and eliminating waste through the standardization of processes. High reliability in Healthcare is a 6unit mini course that will provide students with insight into the unique aspects of the health care environment and the necessary skills to successfully facilitate change in health care organizations. The course will explore elements of highly reliable organizations, culture of safety in the healthcare environment, the evolving science of quality improvement, and the use of clinical pathways to drive highvalue health care.
