88-122 Freshman Seminar: Introduction to Game Theory & Strategy
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
When should a person cooperate and when should a person be selfish in an ongoing social interaction? How can a business establish strategic partnerships when it comes to creating a pie and at the same time battle with competitors when it comes to dividing up the pie? Strategic thinking requires a framework to think through the implications of cooperation and of competition. Game theory is a systematic approach to understanding how people, firms, or countries interact with one another to achieve their own goals. It is a branch of mathematics that informs social science, economics, political science, psychology, and philosophy. As part of the QSSS curriculum, you will in the not-so-distant future have a chance to study the formal techniques of game theory. Here, we focus on the lessons of game theory for strategic decision making.
