85-834 Gender, Development, Brain & Cognition
9–12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This seminar takes a critical look at scientific claims about gender differences in cognition and development. We will examine the evidence behind popular and academic assertions about how girls and boys, women and men, think and learn — and how their brains function. Through readings and discussion, students will explore how empirical findings, statistical methods, and cultural assumptions intersect in the study of gender and mind. The course emphasizes close reading and reflection on how science both shapes and is shaped by social views of gender.
