85-361 Domains in dialogue: Interactions shaping child development
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Open any developmental psychology textbook and you will encounter neatly separated chapters Language development, Motor development, Perceptual development, Social development. The suggestion is that each of these domains is specialized and develops mostly independently. While it is important to study the developmental progression of different abilities, developmental change is ultimately realized through interactions among these domains. In other words, understanding how these different domains develop in tandem and influence each other is critical for theoretical accounts of development and applications of this knowledge in practice. In this course we will dive into the existing evidence, with a focus on infancy and early childhood, to learn about the many ways in which everything is connected in development. We will do this through reading, summarizing, and discussing scientific papers, and through writing assignments to solidify and generalize this learning.
