85-115 Freshman Seminar: The Mind, the Brain, and Computation
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
What is the nature of cognition and thought? How are cognitive processes carried out by the brain? Might similar processes be implemented on a computer, and what would it tell us about human cognition? Traditional disciplines such as psychology, neuroscience, and computer science are working together to provide new and exciting answers to these questions. In this seminar, students will learn about the perspective that each of these fields brings to bear in understanding cognition, and how a combination of approaches can provide greater insight than any one alone. Students will also be exposed to the range of methodologies used by researchers in studying cognition, including functional brain imaging, behavioral studies of brain-damaged patients, neuronal recording in animals, and computational modeling.
