82-713 Support Strategies for Professional Translation
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course supports the development of interpretive and translational competence. Through whole-class workshops and individualized consultations, students in this course will strengthen their ability to analyze nuance, implied intention, rhetorical positioning, register, and voice across diverse text types. This analysis will be furthered through practice reproducing those elements for specific or general target audiences across specified genres. Using texts drawn from their concurrent coursework—such as journalistic reporting, opinion/editorial writing, public-facing communications, and others—students will interpret implicit meaning, identify voice and stance, as well as manage tone and register. Emphasis is placed on transferable strategies that can be applied across evolving academic and professional situations.
