80-885 Foundational Readings in Formal Semantics
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is intended for graduate students in philosophy interested in acquiring a familiarity with linguistic semantics. A great deal of work in contemporary philosophy of language is heavily informed by linguistics in general and by linguistic semantics in particular, and so this background is essential for engaging with that field. The course will provide a high level introduction to basic methodology in semantics, and will introduce students to central topics and results in the field. Topics covered will include noun phrase semantics, including definites and quantification, the semantics of tense, and the semantics of nondeclaratives. The course will be based on readings from the primary literature.
