80-350 Adam Smith
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Adam Smith is known as the father of economics. Many view Smith as a champion, not just of the science of economics, but of modern libertarian thought. His last book, The Wealth of Nations, is seen as the first defense of the value of free market capitalism. Less well known is Smiths earlier work which presents a altogether different picture. In it, Smith emphases the importance of altruism, empathy, and the value of interpersonal connection. In this course we will investigate the thought of Adam Smith, and find that he is far more complex than often portrayed.
