12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This seminar will examine a range of social movements with an eye to some of the basic methodological, theoretical, and ethical questions that historians face in studying them. How have historians approached social movements as units of analysis and what sources have they relied on to understand them How have historians of social movements grappled with theories of social change e.g., historical materialism, poststructuralism, posthumanism and with the geopolitical orientations that underpin them e.g., Eurocentric, Black feminist, decolonial How do or should ethical considerations shape this work Together we will explore these questions through a comparative study of movements with varying origins and aims from slave rebellions to rightwing revanchism, anticolonial nationalism to transnational indigenism.
