79-398 Documenting the 1967 Arab-Israeli War
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course considers how historians practice their craft in interpreting great events with the ArabIsraeli war of 1967 serving as the case study. Students read scholarly accounts of the war and then check them against one another as well as a variety of primary source materials such as memoirs, documents, speeches, newspapers, maps, eyewitness reports and UN resolutions. We will constantly be asking if the sources support the secondary accounts or if there are other interpretations that might lead to different conclusions. We will be examining the texts for tangents left unexplored and possibly worthy of further research. Students should expect a significant reading load, frequent short assignments and a final research paper on a 1967 Warinspired topic.
