79-214 French Enlightenment and Revolution
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The course will examine the history of the First World War from a unique perspective by focusing especially on two of the Allied powers France and Russia. In addition to an overview of political and military events, we will study the experiences of soldiers and civilians in the trenches and on the home front. The war had profoundly disruptive effects on both countries, and we will learn about the political and social consequences, including the 1917 revolution in Russia, the French Army mutinies, and the longerterm effects on gender roles, the workers movement, international relations, and artistic expression. The course is open to all students, including those who have previously studied the First World War in some detail. And if you are able to read documents in French, Russian, or both languages we will find an opportunity for you to put those skills to use in this course.
