79-167 Archaeology of Violence
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course, Archaeology of Violence, introduces students to archaeological and anthropological methods used to investigate violence in past and recent human societies. The course examines how material remains like human skeletal evidence, burial contexts, and landscapes can reveal patterns of conflict, structural inequality, and mass atrocity. Particular attention is given to humanitarian and forensic contexts, including mass grave investigation, human rights documentation, and postconflict recovery efforts. Students will learn how archaeologists and anthropologists collaborate to document violence, identify the dead, and syncretize technological methods with local ideals of justice and memorialization.
