76-745 Foundational Academic Writing for Graduate Students
4.5 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is designed to help you develop the skills you need to participate as an effective, competent, and visible insider in your discipline. Tailored for international graduate students from diverse academic backgrounds and writing experiences, 76-745 provides the same focus on discipline-specific conventions and expectations as 76-748. In this course, students will practice key scholarly genres-including abstracts, literature reviews, and conference presentations-and develop strategies for crafting clear and compelling written and oral communication. Coursework will incorporate various educational technologies such as myProse and DocuScope Corpus Analysis and Concordancer (CAC) to support students' exploration of disciplinary genre conventions and rhetorical strategies related to argumentation, source use, and organizational structure. Students will also develop professional writing habits through peer review, guided feedback, and iterative revision, learning how to strengthen the impact and clarity of their writing.
