76-739 Topics in Film and Media
9–12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Topics vary by semester and section. Fall 2026: Section C: Animation: Matchsticks to Miyazaki - Animation has existed almost as long as motion pictures have been produced, and developments in the history of animation track closely with the history of film as a whole. From an artisanal beginning animated films adopted studio production methods, developed stars, grappled with new technologies such as sound and television, and now must contend with the capabilities of artificial intelligence. This course will examine the history of animation (of all kinds) in film both domestically and globally. Section E: Workshopping the Script - A small and focused film production team of students will adapt and workshop an existing short story script into a fully produced and edited 5-10- minute scene. By the end of the semester the production team will have completed a filmed scene and a pre-production portfolio including storyboards, mood boards, casting selections, location plan, shot list, location shooting and production binder.
