62-808 The Hustle: DIY music event production
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The Hustle is an introduction to DIY musicevent production. Over the last 200 years, we have seen a radical reconceptualization of what music is and how it is practiced. Today, public music experiences often rely on notions of rivalry and excludability, commercialization, and enforced musician and audience identities. This seminar explores how public music events can be constructed around alternative ideas of public good and social affordance and investigates ways to transcend traditional political economies of musician and audience. This seminar allows students to build a practical methodology for public music making built on a relevant literature, case studies, and ethnographic analysis. This seminar is handson and requires a commitment to participate in both on and offcampus events while working toward a realworld capstone project.
