62-706 Generative Systems for Design
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course examines the role of generative systems in architecture, covering both technical methods and theoretical frameworks. Students will investigate how rule-based, agent-based, and probability-based design systems have influenced the development of architectural form and discourse. Through a combination of readings, tutorials, and computational design projects, the course will explore the theoretical and aesthetic aspects of generative design. Projects will critically integrate historical precedents with contemporary digital tools. Design exercises will primarily use Python scripting as well as node-based workflows in Rhino Grasshopper, and include a partial introduction to TouchDesigner.
