57-966 Repertoire Analysis: Significant Works from the 21st Century
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Analysis courses tend to use small snippets of repertoire to demonstrate the application of tools or methodologies, but our school does not yet offer a course that dives deeply into a complete piece. Significant Works from the 21st Century is a graduate analysis course that offers focused time and guided attention into two large-scale works composed in the 21st century which are tied together through a common theme. Through close listening, score analysis, reading of critical scholarship and public-facing reception, as well as considering multiple performances and contemporary practices, students will get to know-from many analytical vantage points-how a piece of contemporary music works and explore the impact of the work on the larger motion of the field. The course will draw upon the areas of expertise of its enrollees in combination with instructor specialty and guidance to develop an encompassing view of important work for our generation. Repertoire for Fall 2026: Missy Mazzoli's "Vespers for a New Dark Age" and Jerod Tate's "Tracing Mississippi"
