57-871 Introduction to Music Technology (self-paced)
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course gives an overview of music technology through practical information and several handson projects. Concepts such as MIDI and digital audio are introduced and specific topics are covered in detail including sequencing, music notation, digital recording, mixing, and production. Throughout the course, students are required to complete several projects and create musical compositions in styles of their own choosing. The student is not graded on the musicality of these compositions, but instead on how well they meet the stated project goals by correctly using specific equipment andor computer programs. This is a selfpaced version of the 57801 course. There are no required classes, and students should be prepared to make time in the evenings or weekend to work on their projects in either the MTC MM119A or some other cluster. There is a help session every week where the students can come to work on their projects or to ask questions about the material. All material and project descriptions are on Blackboard. In addition to the required projects, there is a final exam which can be taken either on paper or online.
