57-769 Sprezzatura: Career Skills in Language for the Collaborative Pianist I
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Lieder, mélodies, and song grew out of a tradition that forges an inextricable link between text and music. Pianists collaborate seamlessly when they have fully learned the vocal line. Additionally, pianists in opera rehearsals must be skilled répétiteurs: professionals who facilitate rehearsal by being rhythmically solid, confident in languages, and able to cue the singer vocally where necessary. This course follows an authentic educational model. Graduate-level Collaborative Piano majors will bring in the repertoire they are preparing for lessons, performances, and opera rehearsals. Special attention will be given to the rules and application of the International Phonetic Alphabet and the corresponding translations; consequently, the pianist must have all texts transcribed, translated, and ready to sing while playing for each assignment.
