54-735 Text to Stage II: Global Theatre Traditions
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
What different forms of theatre have evolved? What is theatre's function? This director seminar investigates these questions by examining seminal international theatre traditions across distinct historical eras. Directors engage comparatively with each tradition, identifying dramaturgical structures and performance conventions. We will read and analyze scripts as well as view recorded performances. Traditions studied include Sanskrit Drama, Zaju, Noh, Kabuki, Anti-Apartheid Theatre, Epic Theatre, and Postmodern Drama. The course expands directors' understanding of theatre as a phenomenon, while also potentially fostering creative inspiration. Course projects are a presentation, a practice-based creative project, and an essay.
