52-399 BXA Interdisciplinary Seminar
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Experiencing Sounds and Musical Languages -- This course, designed for BXA internal transfer students, discusses texts that provoke interdisciplinary critical thinking aiming at problem solving through teamwork. Italo Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millennium, a series of lectures the author intended to deliver at Harvard University in 1985 if sudden death did not intervene, provide the course's theoretical foundation. Further issues of interest discussed during the course include (1) the transformative process of environmental sounds into creative forms of art, (2) principles of art therapies and music medicine, and (3) a study of the complex interdisciplinary teamwork structures that contributed to the realization of the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Students, divided in groups, will embark upon research in one or more fields of inquiry related to the above topics. Ultimately, they will present their findings as teams and individually at the assigned times.
