Design, like all professions and disciplines, is a Community of Practice see Lave, Jean, and Etienne Wenger Situated learning Legitimate peripheral participation [Cambridge university press, 1991. Such Communities are especially important at leading edges since they provide critical validation for attempts to extend or redirect the profession or discipline. The Doctoral Programs at CMUs School of Design involve an annual intensive workshop that are designed to establish and reinforce candidates Community of Practice. Candidates at all levels of both the PhD and the DDes program come together to explore a new developments in design andor design research.
