51-976 Teaching Design II
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course focuses on instructional design in the context of a studio. Students investigate traditional and emergent approaches to studio instruction through readings and discussions situated in the realm of cognitive studies, neuroscience, learning science, instructional design, and educational pedagogy. Through collaboration, students generate and discuss challenges that are common to design, which they use to brainstorm ways of effectively addressing obstacles that they are likely to encounter when teaching. The course introduces students to an instructional design framework which they use to plan learning objectives, learning outcomes, instructional methods, performance measures, assessments, and evaluations for a course of their choosing. Based on their instructional design plans, students develop ideas for conducting, reviewing, and revising their approaches through the crafting of syllabi, project briefs, class exercises, assessment tools, and evaluation metrics.
