51-872 Design Center: Urban Forestry Interventions
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The urban forest describes the trees growing within our cities and towns. There is mounting evidence of the impact they have on human and environmental health. They provide ecosystem services and form a green infrastructure yet are often viewed with ambivalence or as a burden by residents and the local government. At a time when the population is increasingly urbanized, we are losing trees to development and climate change. Through lectures, case studies, and field trips, the course will explore the concept of the urban forest and Pittsburghs own canopy. Students will engage with the groups responsible for planting and maintaining the citys urban forest and experiment with interventions to foster connections between the citys population and the trees that enrich their environment.
