51-819 The Long Now
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The Long Now is about what becomes possible when we engage with longer timespans. It is dedicated to terrain often left underexamined due to the rarity of longterm thinking in the wider culture, with the aim of offering intellectually and creatively adventurous students from diverse contexts a set of opportunities to challenge, deepen and enrich whatever else they may be doing. We will deal with experiential scenarios and timebased media to enable new perspectives on the Anthropocene and beyond, drawing on diverse sources from history, futures, geology, physics, indigenous studies, design, media arts, and more. This course draws inspiration from the work of the Long Now Foundation, a cultural organization dedicated to fostering longterm thinking and responsibility, where the instructor, a professional futurist, has been affiliated for many years. It is presented by Situation Lab, an awardwinning creative research practice founded in 2013, and since 2017 crosssited at Carnegie Mellon and University of Southern California. Please look at the course message for specific meeting dates. Join us and youll never look at time the same way again. Email instructor for course registration approval.
