51-792 Designing & Leading a Business
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Designing and Leading a Business is the capstone project course for MBA's in the Entrepreneurship track. Projects are real businesses in their crucial startup phase, and sponsored efforts from the community. This has created a unique opportunity to form an internal consultancy within the class, made up of upper level and graduate students from Design, HCI, MPD, and other disciplines. The consultants work with the business teams to create a truly integrated project experience and improve the likelihood of success. Depending on individual interests and project needs, the consultancy may assign one student to a single project for the whole semester, or one might choose to work with several "clients" throughout the semester, while having the resources of the consultancy to draw on. The class structure allows students to preserve their individuality, while dealing in a real way with the responsibilities of running a business with a focus on design and service. Tim Cunningham, Founder of product development firm Daedalus, Art Boni, Director of the Don Jones Center for Entrepreneurship, and Dave Mawhinney Associate Director of the Don Jones Center teach the course.
