49-742 How Things Can Be Made
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is for the engineer and non-engineer alike who work on collaborative teams and need to understand each other's professional language, perspectives, processes, and requirements for bringing products and services to fruition. With an engineering forward focus, the class will expose non-engineers to the often complex and safety critical ways engineers approach decision making. Likewise, those with an engineering background will have opportunities to more deeply apply what they know, educate less experienced teammates, and push their thinking with difficult real-world problems. Because this course is for the engineer and non-engineer there are no engineering prerequisites. The course and the assignments will be structured so that regardless of background, students will be challenged and develop skills that will lead to success on future innovation teams. This is a required course for students in MIIPS residential program. This course is open to students in the MIIAS/MIIPS programs from all academic backgrounds. Any other students may be admitted with the permission of the instructor.
