49-706 People First: A Critical Look at Collaboration
3 units, Carnegie Mellon University
FALL 2026 COURSE MEETING DATES: November 6; November 13; November 20 Working with people can be challenging, whether they are your peers, colleagues, clients, and/or users. But challenging does not mean negative. Having a positive attitude toward collaboration is key. In the words of humorist Amy Poehler: "As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration. Other people and other people's ideas are often better than your own. Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life." In this micro, let's change some lives as we explore through a myriad of activities what it really means to work with people. This class will address key points related to the responsibilities we have individually and as members of a team for a successful collaborative experience. The course consists of classroom discussion, readings and reflections, and group activities to provide both theoretical approaches and practical experiences to collaboration. Successfully working together as a team member in school, in career, and in life generally is a differentiator for success. This class will provide a basis to build on as you look towards future career and especially as you participate in the team projects inherent to the MIIPS degree. In this course we will cover topics such as high performance teams, providing feedback, and conflict resolution. This is a required course for all MIIAS and MIIPS residential students.
