48-744 Special Topics BPD: Applied Computational Fluid Dynamics in Building Design
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Building and interior design layout have significant impact on indoor air flow and ventilation performance. Efficient airflow can provide high indoor air quality, good thermal comfort as well as low energy consumption. By understanding how air flows inside a space through simulation study, designers can improve their design more confidently. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful technique to solve and analyze fluid flow problems. With the rapid development of computer technology, it has become increasing accessible for applications in different domains. This course does not assume any prior background computational fluid dynamics theory or practice. Fundamental theory that can be applied to indoor airflow simulation will be introduced. The topics covered will include mesh generation, basic fluid dynamics theory, efficiency and flow patterns of different ventilation systems, thermal comfort, natural convection and solar radiation effect. The course will use scSTREAM software as the teaching tool. It will provide the opportunity for students from the architectural and engineering backgrounds to learn and work together on real world problem solving, with a good grasp of the basic theory and application of CFD.
