48-327 Modeling Moderns, Beinecke Library, Yale
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
In taking this elective you will become familiar with a full set of construction drawings by Eero Saarinen and Associates. The drawings describe two adjacent buildings completed in 1955 at the center of the MIT campus. One is an innovative thinshell concrete vault forming the Kresge Auditorium and the other an exquisite brick drum which is the Chapel. The class will use these archive documents to make interpretive digital and physical models of the buildings. The class will work collaboratively and use Revit and Autocad 3D tools for digital modeling and digital fabrication to assist in the making of wood and plaster models. An historical reappraisal of these buildings will be shown through 3D animations and models which will be reviewed and exhibited at the end of semester. An optional weekend visit to the buildings in MIT will be made in the first half of semester.
