48-233 IDeATe: Bioform
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course will explore the intersections of matter, fabrication, form, and ecology. Students will research and design with biological media encountering issues of growth, decay, stability, and mutation that will necessitate materially informed methods of design. The course will focus on local, renewable, and rapidgrowth materials, and will introduce digital tools and fabrication techniques to engage the limitations and affordances of biological matter. Students will become familiar with contemporary theories, methods, and built projects, and the semester will culminate in studentled design work and the development of 11 prototypes.
