47-766 Innovative & Sustainable Operations
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
In this course we will examine recent studies in the emerging area of research in operations management (OM): innovative and sustainable operations. Research in this area has gained importance and popularity among leading scholars in the past decade. This trend can be explained from both demand and supply sides of research. First, significant changes in the landscape of the global marketplace have required new ways to innovate and collaborate among people and companies across the world. The advancement in information technology and the availability of big data further pose new opportunities and challenges in OM. In addition, there has been growing interest in sustainability and corporate social responsibility. As a result, a new set of topics and research questions that warrant close scrutiny have emerged. Second, traditional areas of research in OM, such as inventory, transportation, production, and project managementand even more recent areas such as supply contracting and coordinationare becoming more and more mature. Thus, it is increasingly difficult to make (or claim) significant contributions to these well-established areas and justify publications in top journals. Therefore, researchers are attempting to explore novel topics.
