46-890 Managing People and Teams
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
As you progress in your career, you will inevitably 1) work for other people, 3) work with other people, and 3) lead other people. The goal of this course is to enhance your ability to work effectively with others so that you can use your quantitative expertise to not only create innovative products and initiatives, but also ensure that those initiatives are taken up and implemented successfully. Your success as a contributor and leader depends on your ability to influence others and engage them in the pursuit of collective goals, communicate clearly, secure resources for yourself and your team, and align your team's technical efforts with your organization's broader mission and competitive strategy. To obtain these objectives, you will need to ensure that you have the right people on your teams, that the team has the right goals, and that the team is coordinating their work effectively, as evidenced by team processes and culture. In line with the MSBA program's learning objectives, your work in this course will foster your ability to problem solve collaboratively with your peers. We will draw on social science research from organizational behavior and related fields to enhance your leadership toolkit and improve your ability to analyze and understand people, teams, and organizational dynamics.
