27-790 Special Topics: Mult-ferroics and Smart materials
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
In this course we follow up on the course Ferroics and Multiferroics Special Topics Spring 2015 by considering the interaction between and among ferroic materials. We start by discussing symmetry breaking, order parameters, domains, domain walls and switching of domains in the ferroic materials. Then we investigate MagnetoElectric Materials , Shape memory materials and magnetic shape memory materials. Throughout the emphasis will be on the role that domains play in the properties and the functionalities of the materials. This will entail knowledge of Crystallography, thermodynamics and phase transformations.
Prerequisites: 27-796 (min C) and 27-798 (min C)
