27-101 Everyday Materials
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is for NONCIT students ONLY. This course is developed as an introductory level course suitable for undergraduate students outside of the College of Engineering. The course, will provide a basic introduction to materials and engineering principles and discuss how everyday activities are influenced by materials selection and basic engineering principles. It will illustrate that engineering is not only about math and science, but also about social problemsolving. This project aims to build creative thinking by giving students enough exposure to the cultural and physical dimensions of materials and materials science to enable them to see current problems in new ways. It will explore a wide range of topics from simple choices we make in materials for everyday use, through issues and concerns about materials and global sustainability. T The course features weekly units about different materials, case study presentations, demonstrations and projects that explore materials, their properties and their potential application. Potentially we will have guest lecturers with specialization in the use of materials in different disciplines. The course is intended to be a place where you can bring your questions and interests for refinement and discussion so that we deemphasize the engineering and make materials engineering more broadly understood and more widely considered in your everyday activities.
