24-767 Mechanics of Fracture and Fatigue
12 units, Carnegie Mellon University
The main topics of this course relate to the analysis of elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics problems. Basic concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics are covered, including the nature of near-crack-tip fields and energetic approaches to fracture problems. Test methods are discussed, with particular emphasis on their theoretical basis. Other topics addressed include path independent integrals, mixed-mode fracture, interfacial fracture and applications to thin films. Emphasis is placed on a theoretical understanding of crack growth under cyclic and sustained loading and how this understanding can be applied to component design. 4 hrs. lecture Prerequisite: 24-751 or equivalent
