19-463 Special topics: ICT Applications for Sustainable Development
9 units, Carnegie Mellon University
In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals SDG for 2030. These 17 goals call on all countries to promote prosperity while protecting the environment. The SDGs include providing universal access to clean and affordable energy, providing quality water and sanitation, developing sustainable cities and communities, protecting life below water and over land, among others. Much attention has been given to the use of Information and Communication Technologies ICT in the context of developed countries. However, ICTs could also be applied toward social, economic, and political development. In this projectbased course, students will identify opportunities for the deployment of ICTs to support the SDGs. Students will work on identifying one ICT application geared towards an individual SDG of their choice and will work to develop a proposal for the implementation of their idea.
