17-815 Writing Workshop for Computer Science Researchers
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
A small-group course for PhD students who want to learn to write better research papers. Students will work on improving one of their own pieces of writing --- ideally a research paper under preparation, but job materials or similar may also work. Contact the instructor if you have questions. Weekly meetings will consist of short, practical exercises on research writing, along with regular writer's workshop sessions where the group reads and discusses each other's drafts in a structured, supportive format. By the end of the course, students will have polished papers at or near submission quality; practical techniques for structuring, drafting, and revising research writing in general; and experience reading research writing critically and giving constructive feedback. This course is designed to integrate with your existing graduate student research obligations. The bulk of the work will be on a paper you need to write anyway. Weekly preparation will be kept tractable, generally centered around reading parts of your peers' work. Open to PhD students in SCS and ECE (or related areas) with a current research writing project.
