17-677 MSIT/MITS Project I
6–18 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course is only for students enrolled in the Microsoft-S3D partnership, Preceptorship in AI-Augmented Software Engineering Certificate. This is a project-based course in which students work on the project assigned by their employer, receiving mentorship from an assigned preceptor. This is not a lecture-based course; the instructors will meet with students in peer learning groups that discuss topics related to AI-Augmented Software Engineering. The discussions will center around the use of AI in software engineering, the application of what they learn in their coursework to their project, and what students are learning together with their preceptors about various software engineering activities. Small group discussions will alternate with biweekly meetings of the entire course in which groups present what they have learned about the topic to each other. Students will leave the course with a firsthand understanding of the software engineering realities and AI tools employed in modern SE practices, will have concrete experience with these practices, and will have engaged in active reflection on this experience. After the course, students will have the teamwork, process, and product skills to be effective contributors in an AI-enabled software engineering organization.
