17-675 Software Engineering Practicum
36 units, Carnegie Mellon University
This course provides a capstone experience for MSE Scalable Systems and MSE Embedded Systems students. Students work in teams on software projects that are sponsored by "client" organizations. It's an opportunity for students to apply the principled, disciplined approaches they've learned in their MSE courses to a practical and dynamic real-world project. The projects are important to the sponsoring organization and they are involved in the project. As in professional settings, these projects provide a dynamic and, often times, ambiguous goal, scope and requirements that challenge the student teams. Each team is assigned 1-2 mentors who have extensive industry, mentoring and/or teaching experience. They meet regularly with their team to guide them towards the goals of their client and the MSE program. Also, faculty members who are experts in various Software Engineering practice areas provide coaching and feedback to teams, as requested, in applying, explaining and justifying the use of Software Engineering principles and discipline. In the end, student teams will have delivered valuable software results that satisfies their clients goals and the academic program goals while advancing their own software engineering skills. NOTE: This capstone experience begins with Practicum Orientation Day, which occurs on the Friday before the semester begins. All students are required to attend in-person. It's a full-day event with a class session in the morning followed by project presentations by the sponsoring organizations.
