17-653 Research Methods for Software Engineers
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Scientific methods can be used to understand, predict and explain engineering practices and solutions in industrial settings. Selecting the most appropriate method is often driven by an initial research question or hypothesis, followed by the investigator evaluating the methods assumptions, before following the methods procedures. This course will introduce students to qualitative and quantitative research methods with examples of their application, and guidance on how to interpret their results and measurements. Students will practice the application of select methods in homework assignments, and will read and critique the methods used in published industry studies. At the end of the course, students will understand foundational concepts in scientific research upon which they can extend their knowledge through selfstudy.
