17-652 Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Technology
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Over the course of history, many of the most meaningful developments in Technology came through the inspiration and perspiration of forwardthinking thoughtleaders that were seeking to develop new solutions to our societys problems and sought to disrupt the statusquo through driving changes in both the technology as well as the thoughtprocess for how to approach problemsolving. These changes often come from individuals or small teams that are passionate about Innovation and have an inner drive for Entrepreneurship that is a powerful force for turning the possible into reality. This course will examine the important moments of Innovation in our History and will study the inventors and Entrepreneurs that created these momentous events, often changing society in dramatic ways. Our focus will quickly shift towards the modern era, where software, telecommunications, the Internet, and the Tech Startup came into being, and how over the last 25 years these concepts have fueled a Digital Renaissance that has greatly accelerated the pace of technology evolution and maturation while driving economic opportunities for the businesses that bring these new technology products to market. Upon examining notable examples of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the 21st century Tech Sector, we will investigate how these events transpired, what elements of leadership and corporate culture are required to drive Innovation in the future, and how Entrepreneurs can navigate the crowded field of tech startups toward success. We will examine how concepts of Innovation and Entrepreneurship can be implemented in larger mature organizations, and how Academia plays a role in the invention process in the hightech sector.
