17-628 Emerging Opportunities in Quantum Computing
6 units, Carnegie Mellon University
Quantum computers can solve certain problemsfrom cryptography to simulation of the natural worldfaster than their classical counterparts. The successful realization of these devices requires advances across multiple disciplines beyond physics. This course will explore emerging opportunities to contribute to the development of quantum computing from diverse perspectivesas engineers, programmers, policy makers, and more. As the field is rapidly evolving, the course content will adapt to reflect the latest developments. However, some core technical topics will include the application of classical artificial intelligence and machine learning in quantum computing, highperformance computing for quantum simulations, realtime error correction in faulttolerant quantum systems, and quantum control theory across the quantum computational stack. Some core societal topics include ethical implications, funding environments, and government regulation. Students will read recent literature to prepare for lectures, where well address clarifying questions before engaging in practical, smallgroup discussions and exercises. We also plan to invite experts, such as those from the Pittsburgh Quantum Institute, startups and large corporations, and policy organizations, to share their journeys into the field of quantum computing and provide insights into the most pressing challenges today.
